World No. 1 Iga Swiatek began her quest for an Olympic gold medal in Paris with a commanding performance. She defeated French player Diane Parry 6-1, 6-1 in just 74 minutes during their second-round match at Roland Garros.
Swiatek effectively exploited Parry’s weaknesses, particularly targeting her second serve, which proved vulnerable throughout the match. Parry struggled to score points off her second serve, and Swiatek also capitalized on Parry’s less accurate forehand. By consistently applying pressure, Swiatek kept Parry on the defensive.
Parry’s best moments came when she managed to avoid a bagel in the first set. Swiatek led 5-0, but Parry managed to win one game by improving her serve momentarily. Similarly, Parry’s lone game in the second set came when her first serve was effective enough to cause some errors from Swiatek. However, when Parry’s serve faltered, Swiatek seized control.
Swiatek’s dominance at Roland Garros is well-established. She has previously won the French Open in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024, making her one of the most successful players on this surface in recent years, with comparisons often drawn to Rafael Nadal.
This victory marks Swiatek’s best performance in Olympic play to date. In the previous Olympics in Tokyo, she was eliminated in the second round. Now, she has advanced to the third round, where she will face either Diana Shnaider, competing under the neutral athletes flag, or Xiyu Wang from China.
